Daniel Defoe is probably the most read author of English literature of all time. Colonel Jack, partly autobiographical, was written shortly after Robinson Crusoe. Like other Defoe novels, it marks the transition between the adventure novel and the so-called psychological one. The protagonist, Jack, a boy raised in the underworld of London, dreams of getting out of poverty, climbing the social ladder and achieving glory ... They are the vicissitudes of an adventurer in the convulsive early eighteenth century in Europe and America, when England, France and Spain disputed the domains of the known world. Much of the work takes place in Spanish America - Veracruz, Havana ... - where Jack is taken prisoner in his search for fortune. Daniel Defoe (1660-1731), was born into a humble family. He was a wine merchant, tax collector, director of a brick and tile company, pamphleteer, intelligence agent, prisoner ... but above all a cult author, one of the fathers of the novel in England and a forerunner of the adventure genre. Among his best known works include Robinson Crusoe, The Adventures of Captain Singleton, and Moll Flanders.
